Jim Kohlmoos

President and CEO

Jim started his career in education with the U.S. Teacher Corps in California in 1971 and subsequently served in the Peace Corps in Malaysia for two years. Prior to joining Knowledge Alliance in 2001, he was a vice president for The Implementation Group, a Washington, DC-based government relations firm. From 1993-2000, Jim served at the U.S. Department of Education as both a deputy assistant secretary of Elementary and Secondary Education and as a senior adviser. Prior to joining the Department of Education, he was vice president of the Close Up Foundation. Jim is a graduate of Stanford University. More >>

Augustus Mays

Manager of Policy and Advocacy

Augustus joined the staff of Knowledge Alliance in March 2009. Augustus comes to the Alliance from the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools where he coordinated and subsequently managed a broad portfolio of college accreditation activities around the country. A self-described lover of politics and policy, Augustus earned a master of public administration from the University of Oklahoma and a bachelor of arts in political science from Virginia Commonwealth University. Augustus was born in Agana, Guam into a military family. Besides Guam, he has lived in many places around the United States and the world. He currently resides in Arlington, Virginia.

John Waters

Advocacy Coordinator & Office Manager

John has been a staff member since August 1997. Prior to joining Knowledge Alliance, John worked as a consultant for the National Institute of Real Estate (NIRE) Career Institute. He has also held sales positions in the retail sector. Included among his leisure time interests are mountain biking, golf and supporting the professional sports teams of Washington, DC. John holds a B.A. in Government from the College of William and Mary.
